More detail on this person: I was Rusty's flight surgeon for five years. He was in a small USAR aviation unit in Norman, OK, that I adopted while at Fort Sill and drilled with them once a month. I flew with Rusty at the controls many times. He was a meticulous and hard working USAR aviator, and always had a smile, cracking jokes on the flight line with fellow USAR Warrants. He died 11 Jul 1989 off the coast of Galveston, TX, when a Bell 206L1 and an Aerospatiale AS350D had a midair collision and crashed uncontrolled into the Gulf of Mexico. The Bell was on an announced departure from an airfield and the Aerospatiale was on an announced transition of the same airspace, both at the wrong angle for visual identification and avoidance.
