More detail on this person: Army colonel Charles Anders, 79, died of colon cancer Wednesday at Charlestown Care Center in Catonsville, where he had lived for the past two years. He was 79.

He retired in 1972 after 30 years of active duty.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Colonel Anders was a 1941 graduate of Ohio State University and received his commission the next year. He was assigned to the Army Air Forces, flying spotter planes over Italy, Africa, France and Germany during World War II. He received a Purple Heart after his plane was shot down over France in 1945.

In 1948, he married Margaret Sharow, whom he met in 1947 when she was an Army nurse in occupied Japan. After he retired, the couple settled in Falls Church, Va., where he was a volunteer firefighter and active with the Boy Scouts.

He was an officer of the parish council at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Charlestown, 717 Maiden Choice Lane in Catonsville, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 a.m. today.

An inurnment service will be held at Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery at 1 p.m. Nov. 14.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Mary Jean Saunders of Richmond, Va.; two sons, Michael Thomas Anders and Robert Charles Anders, both of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Margaret Ann Weller of Melbourne, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
