Stephen M. Atkins, Carrollton, Texas

Word has been received here of the death Friday of Stephen M. Atkins, 39, of Carrollton, Texas.

A native of Columbus, he was a 1961 graduate of Columbus High School where he was a member of the basketball, track and cross country teams. He was among the top ten seniors in his graduating class of 1961 and during his high school years served as vice president of the Indiana Junior Heart Association board.

He was graduated from Indiana University School of Business in 1965 and served as an Army helicopter pilot for two years in Vietnam where he rose to the rank of captain. He returned to Mineral Wells, Texas, where he was a helicopter pilot instructor. He later was employed by the Social Security Administration in Austin, Texas, until 1974 when he was transferred to the Dallas regional office. He was a member of Holy Covenant Methodist Church at Carrollton.

Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Restland Memorial Funeral Home at Dallas. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Verne W. Atkins of 2208 Caldwell, who are living temporarily in Texas; his wife, Sandra J. Jacobs Atkins; two children, Christopher S. and Erin S. Atkins; a sister, Jayne M. Atkins of Dallas, and a brother, William G. Atkins of Flora.
