More detail on this person: Broderick, James L. "SIDEKICK IV" US Army Veteran Age 69 of
Oakdale Retired CW4 James L. Broderick died May 15th at the V.A. Hospital in Minneapolis after a two
year battle with cancer. Broderick was born November 2, 1938 in Waukon, Iowa. He joined the Army
Reserve in 1956 while in high school and served ten years as an enlisted man as a combat engineer,
before graduating flight school with WORWAC 66-9. He served in Vietnam as a gun pilot with the 92nd
AHC "SIDEKICKS" from Oct 67-Oct 68 and the Gulf War Jan 91-July 91 as Bridgade Safety Officer 1st
INF DIV, retired Aug 91. His awards and decorations include: Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying
Cross, Air Medal W/22 OLC, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Service Medal
and Master Army Aviator. However, he was proudest of recognition for twenty-four years of
accident-free flying, excellence in competition awards for rifle shooting and having flown with the
Vice Presidential Flight Detachment, stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. Broderick served tours
in Greenland, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea, Germany and finally Saudi Arabia and Iraq. He also counts
seven rotations at Fort Irwin, CA. He was a Shriner and Knights Templer, a member of Enterprise
Lodge 437, Enterprise, Kansas. He is survived by sons, Lance and Sean; daughter, Bridget; four
grandchildren, Regan, Jacob, Shawna and Michael; sisters, Sheri Broderick Schoeller and Tanya
Vasquez; brothers, Danny Bickham, Robert Michael Broderick, Martin Broderick and Patrick Broderick;
nieces & nephews; and closest friends, Mike Wlaschin and Pete Tacheny. Funeral Service Monday
11:00 AM at SANDBERG FUNERAL HOME, 2593 E. 7th Ave., North St. Paul. Interment Fort Snelling
National Cemetery. Visitation Sunday from 5-8 PM at the Mortuary and 1/2 hour prior to service on
Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the James L. Broderick Memorial Fund to be used
for the enrichment of veterans at the Minneapolis VA Hospital. Sandberg Funeral Home 651-777-2600
