More detail on this person: U.S. Veteran Lt. Col. Melvin Lee Bailey (U.S. Army Retired) went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday, July 23, 2018. He was born on April 8, 1947 and grew up in Virginia Beach until he joined the U.S. Army in 1965. He served his country as a helicopter pilot for 34 years and also worked for Lockheed-Martin as a Scientific Computer Analyst. He was a longtime member and elder of the Evangelical Friends denomination. He enjoyed flying, sailing, and volunteering at the Virginia War Museum. Melvin is survived by his wife, Mary Bean Bailey, to whom he was married 48 years; his children, David Lee Bailey and wife Angela, and Sheila Bailey Downs and husband Raymond; grandchildren, Melissa Downs and Micah Bailey; one brother William Harry Garry and wife Tammy; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Kathleen Justice; stepfather Ira Justice; and grandson Joshua Bailey. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 AM Friday, July 27, 2018 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 11 AM. Burial with full military honors will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
