Lt. Col. James Beam
COLUMBIA - Funeral service for Lt. Colonel James D. Beam, U.S. Army (Ret.), 74, will be held at 11
o'clock Wednesday, October 6, 2004 in Shives Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel. Interment will follow in
Greenlawn Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening
from 5:30 until 7:00 o'clock at the funeral home.
Lt. Colonel Beam died Saturday, October 2, 2004. Born in Cherryville, NC, he was a son of David
Marcus and Ada Sperling Beam. He was a graduate of Clemson University. He entered the U.S. Army
in 1953 where he was a fixed wing and helicopter pilot serving in the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.
Lt. Colonel Beam was also Commander of the 7th Battalion and Executive Officer of the 2nd Brigade at
Fort Jackson, SC. Following his retirement from the military in 1977, he was employed with the SC
Department of Corrections. In 1997 he retired as Warden of Goodman Correctional Institution.
Survivors include his wife; Marilyn Miller Beam of Columbia; a daughter; Beverly B. Flynn, of
Columbia, sons and daughters-in-law; Steve and Dawn Beam of Cary, NC and Michael and Alicia Beam
of Columbia, grandchildren; Casey Beam, Brian Flynn, Michelle, Jordan, Lauren, Leslie, and Taylor
Beam. Also surviving are a brother, Charles Beam of Columbia and sisters; Madge Whitworth of Waco,
NC and Margaret Allen of Denver, NC. Lt. Colonel Beam was preceded in death by his brothers;
Talmage Beam and David Beam and his sisters, Pearl Allen, Geneve Hord, and Marie Williams.
