More detail on this person: Jack Birmingham passed away on March 28, 2024, with his family by his side. He was the husband of Paula Birmingham, and they shared almost 41 years of marriage together. Jack was born in Jacksonville, N.C., the son of Grant and Janet Birmingham. He graduated from high school in Baltimore and later from the University of California, Berkley earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and juris doctorate from the Berkley School of Law. Jack was drafted into military service in 1966, and was honorably discharged in 1970. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross in 1969 for his extraordinary heroism in the Vietnam War. Jack was also awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Silver and Bronze Star and other military medals. He will be buried at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. More than anything else, Jack thoroughly enjoyed the annual deer hunt in Kodiak, Alaska, with his son and close friends. He loved everything about hunting - from planning the hunt with various and sundry checklists, successfully finishing the hunt and butchering his own meat in the kitchen at home. Jack loved fishing, camping and generally any outdoor activity, as long as it was in Alaska - particularly any activity that involved doing things with guns, rifles and fishing poles. Jack never met a stranger and made many friends over the years wherever he went. He was always interested in how and what other people were doing and shared many stories with those he met. Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Paula; son, Grant; sisters, Kitty and Anne; brother, Bill; sisters-in-law, Cathi (Steve) and Susan (Steve); nieces, Rebecca and Janet; and many friends. A memorial service and celebration of Jack's life is planned for June 2, 2024, at 2-5 p.m., at the Viking Hall. Please join us in celebrating this extraordinary man.
