2012, at Bowling Green Health and Rehab Center.
He became Pvt. Boyle in 1942, when he joined the U.S. Army. He began training with General George
Patton's brigade at Fort A.P. Hill, and ultimately served with him in the African desert as a

through many takeoffs and landings on its deck. For this, he was presented with an actual "tail
hook."
In 1967, Lt. Col. Boyle was sent to serve in yet another combat zone, the Vietnam War. This time he
was a rescue pilot for downed helicopter crews and ground personnel while flying his helicopter
through nonstop gunfire and Agent Orange.
His military career spanned 32 years. Col. Boyle was stationed at the Pentagon when he retired in
1974 as the Army's senior test pilot.
His many awards include both the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
He and his wife, Julia, settled in Bowling Green, where he was very active in the VFW and the
American Legion.
