NEWTON -- Mr. Beard, age 67, of Fannie Bolick Drive, passed away Saturday, November 11, 2006 at his residence after a brief, six-month battle with pancreatic cancer. Born August 22, 1939 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Carroll C. Beard and the late Annie Jane Fox Beard.

He married Hilte Kress Beard of Germany in 1960 in Switzerland. He was a veteran of the US Army, served two tours in Vietnam as a helicopter rescue pilot, and retired as a military officer after 29 years of service. He was highly decorated having received many medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, 3 Bronze Starts, the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Med 38, National Defense Service Medal, and many others. During his years of service, he helped save many lives.

There will be no services. The family will receive friends at the residence.
