More detail on this person: Douglas Nathanial
Blue passed away at MD Anderson on April 4,
2013, with his loving wife, Carolyn, by his side.
Doug courageously battled lung cancer as he did
all things, with a positive outlook and an
unbridled determination which marked him as the
man we've come to know. Doug was born in
Cleveland, Texas, March 21, 1939. He was
preceded in death by his parents, Delmer Nathaniel
Blue and Ruthie Mae Blue. Doug proudly served his
country in the U.S. Navy submarine service from
1957 to 1965 on board the USS Thornback, the
USS Daniel Webster, and the USS Ethan Allan. He
also served his country in the U.S. Army from 1967
till his retirement in 1977. He served in Vietnam
with the 101st Airborne Division as a helicopter
gunship pilot and was awarded the Bronze Star and
14 Air Medals.
Doug met and married the love of his life, Carolyn
J. Giacalone on September 23, 1961, at St.
Martha's Catholic Church in Uniondale, New York.
Together they enjoyed a life full of adventure,
traveling the World, boating, ranching, and
raising 4 boys who would ultimately follow in
their Father's footsteps as patriots in our
nation's service.
Doug enjoyed adventure and was bigger than life to
those around him. He was a true inspiration and a
fantastic role model to his children and
grandchildren; infusing them with a "Can Do"
spirit that lives on in the company he founded. We
all knew him to be the man to call to get
something done or to fix a problem.
Doug is survived by his loving wife, Carolyn;
Sons, William D. Blue, Donald N. Blue, David S.
Blue, and Douglas N. Blue II; grandchildren Billy,
Rachel, Natalie, Douglas, Amber, Anthony, Connor,
and Kate; sisters, Kathy, Rose, Betty, and Jerry;
brother Dean; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many
more friends he met along the way.
The family would like to thank Doug's sister and
brother-in-law, Betty and Bill Hammond, for their
many years of love and devotion. Also, to Doug and
Carolyn's family, friends, and neighbors for their
generosity and support.
Thank you for all who called, prayed, and sent
heart felt messages as he fought the good fight.
Our family is truly grateful for the excellent
care given by his physicians and the entire staff
at MD Anderson who provided his care with love,
comfort, and compassion.
Doug will be remembered for his true grit,
unwavering determination, and strength of
character; but most of all, for his deep love for
Carolyn and his family. He will be sorely missed
by all of us.
"High Flight"
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling
mirth
of sun-split clouds, - and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and
swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy
grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew -
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
- Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
