More detail on this person: Retired Army Lt. Col. Edward Joseph Balda Jr., 61, a resident of Gambrills since 1985, died Dec. 6 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis. The cause of death was unavailable.

Col. Balda was born in LaSalle, Ill., and retired from the Army in 1980 after 22 years of service.

He was recently employed as a manager with the state Department of Corrections and Facilities.

He was a Roman Catholic by faith.

His memberships included: Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 33; the VFW in Jessup, and the American Legion in Baltimore.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Balda; four children, William Balda of Frankfort, Ky., Karen Peterson of Baltimore, David Balda of Sandy, Utah, and J. Scott Balda of Copperas Cove, Texas; three grandchildren; his mother, Rosalind Balda of Baltimore; a brother, Jerome Balda of Centerville, Va.; and a sister, Jacqueline Balda of Baltimore.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday at Hardesty Funeral Home, 851 Annapolis Road in Gambrills.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 12:45 p.m. Thursday at Fort Meyer Chapel in Fort Meyer, Va., with interment to follow in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va.
