More detail on this person: Carrell M. Barrow Jr., 68, a retired U.S . Army officer, died Oct. 29 at his home in Pacific Grove.

He was was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Jasper County, Texas, and had lived in Pacific Grove for 18 years after moving from Incline Village, Nev.

He earned a bachelor's degree in 1955 from Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas. He then joined the military and obtained a master's degree from Kansas State University in Manhattan. He retired as a lieutenant colonel after 21 years of service. Col. Barrow served two tours of duty as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star with three oak leaf clusters and V device, the Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster and the Legion of Merit. He was instrumental in the effort to enable military personnel to golf at the Bayonet and Black Horse golf courses at affordable rates.

He enjoyed golf, composing country western songs, writing poetry, fishing and traveling in his recreational vehicle.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Barrow of Pacific Grove; three sons, Robert W. Barrow of Tahoe Vista, William C. Barrow of Tallinn, Estonia, and John H. Barrow of Reno, Nev.; a stepson, James R. Kean of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Catherine A. Ross of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Kimberly A. Haack of Hood River, Ore.; a sister, Beth Simmons of Newton, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.
