More detail on this person: CARROLL, Edward EDWARD PATRICK CARROLL Lt. Col. Edward Patrick Carroll, age 83, of Alpharetta died July 18, 2014. Lt. Col Carroll entered the service at the age of 17. By the age of 23 he had obtained the rank of Sergeant Major while in the 4th battalion in England. While in England, he met and married his wife, Eunice Edna Sherratt Carroll. In January 1956 he and his family moved back to the United States and were stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado. He was then accepted into Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning. Upon completion he had earned the rank of 1st Lieutenant. He was a member of the 82nd airborne and was stationed at Fort Bragg in North Carolina. He went to Army Aviation School where he trained in both fixed wing and rotary wing before becoming a master aviator and instructor. He then became the assistant to the secretary of the aviation training center at Fort Rucker in Alabama which he led until his retirement in 1972 at the rank of Lt. Colonel. Highlights of his decorated military career included being the youngest officer at the time to attend the prestigious Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas. His tour duties included South Korea and Vietnam from 1965-1966 where he received the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Campaign Medal that was personally given by the General of the South Vietnamese Armed Services. After a successful civilian career in which he obtained a college degree along with a law degree, he volunteered and gave thousands of hours to assist other wounded and disabled veterans through his work with the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Lt. Col. Carroll was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Eunice Edna Sherratt Carrroll. He is survived by his loving children, Susan Lowry of Alpharetta, Michael and Sylvia Carroll of Cumming, Patricia and Randy Thompson of Sugar Hill, Charlene and Jerry Wood of Lady Lake, FL, Sheila Carroll of Alpharetta; grandchildren, Stephen Lowry, Paul Carroll, Sarah Constantakis, Jennifer Yarbourgh, Katherine Thompson, Michael Carroll, Geoffrey Thompson along with 3 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2014 at 2:00pm in the funeral home chapel.
