More detail on this person: Guy "Kirk" Curran Obituary In Loving Memory of Guy Kirkwold Curran Known affectionately to friends and family as Kirk, he passed away peacefully on the morning of September 28, 2025, in Burke, Virginia, leaving behind a legacy of wisdom, bravery, sharp intellect - and above all, a deep and abiding love for his family. Born on December 26, 1944, in Palacios, Texas, Kirk's early years were marked by an insatiable curiosity and a remarkable ability to understand the world around him. Kirk retired as a highly decorated Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, having served as a fixed- and rotary-wing Master Army Aviator. He was among the first classes of Cobra pilots, and flying quickly became his greatest passion. He earned numerous pilot certifications, including commercial and instrument ratings, Airline Transport Pilot multi-engine and type rating for the Boeing 737, as well as certifications for single- and multi-engine land, glider, and helicopter operations. He was also a certified primary and secondary flight instructor. Simply put, Kirk loved to fly. Known for his analytical mind and his ability to solve complex problems with ease and precision, Kirk was a trusted advisor to colleagues and friends alike. They often sought his counsel, knowing he approached every challenge with focus, integrity, and a desire to get the job done right the first time. Kirk's courage was equally remarkable. He faced life's adversities with unwavering resolve, inspiring everyone around him to do the same. Among his many military honors, the most distinguished was the Silver Star, awarded for gallantry and exceptional valor in combat during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, Kirk embarked on a second, equally impactful career, spending 26 years as a senior aviation program analyst and Chief of Staff with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). His work was instrumental in the development of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) System, a groundbreaking advancement in aviation safety and efficiency. For their work, Kirk and his team were awarded the prestigious Collier Trophy. Most importantly, Kirk was a devoted husband, father, and friend who cared deeply about those he loved. His family was the center of his world, and his strength, warmth, and generosity will be felt for generations to come. We celebrate a life well-lived - and raise a glass in his honor. Here's to you, Kirk - martini in hand, Grey Goose and olive - on your final flight. Kirk is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Sandy; his sons Kirk C. Curran (Katie) and Barry P. Toole (Hannah); his sister-in-law Dianne Glass and her husband Richard; and his cherished grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Marion Curran, and his brother, Louis Curran, Jr. (Ed). Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to share their stories, love, and memories of Kirk at a gathering on October 26, 2025. Guests should contact Kirk's family members for event information. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2026 at 11:00am at the Old Post Chapel at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.
