More detail on this person: John A Carrigan
passed away on October 21, 2016, in Colorado
Springs, CO. Loving husband and father,
distinguished Vietnam veteran, recipient of two
purple hearts, and a thoughtful and insightful
leader. John had meticulous attention to detail
and a remarkable knack for getting people to work
together. Whenever there was a friend in need, he
was the first one in line to lend a hand.
Born 17, 1945, to parents Bessie and Bernard
Carrigan in Peoria, Il, John was the youngest of
four children. He attended Bradley University
before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served
as a helicopter pilot in the 119th Assault
Helicopter Company from 1966 to 1970. For his
selfless acts in Vietnam, he received two purple
hearts, and was recommended for the Distinguished
Flying Cross, the nation's fourth-highest award.
John was also awarded the Air Medal for his
distinguished service during his 12-month tour of
duty in Vietnam.
On March 9, 1969, John married Susan
Montgomery and proceeded to raise 3 wonderful
children. He worked for AMP/Tyco for 27 years as a
Director of Sales & Marketing. Upon retirement in
2010, John and Sue moved to Colorado where they
renewed their love for the outdoors by taking up
hiking and biking. John continued his hobby of
researching history, particularly the Civil War
and WWII eras.
Never able to stay fully retired, John joined the
Pikes Peak Chapter of Military Officers of America
(PPC-MOAA), and became chapter president in
2016. He absolutely loved his role as the
president and was passionate about helping the
returning vets.
John is survived by his wife, Susan (Montgomery)
Carrigan; his three children: Amy (Carrigan) Ehm,
Bryan Carrigan, and Jennifer Carrigan; son-in-law
Ron Ehm; two grandchildren, two brothers and a
sister, and several nieces and nephews. He will be
terribly missed by family and friends.
