Harold served with the Black Widows (188th AHC) from April until October 1968 attaining the rank of
CW2. He was a gunship pilot with callsign Spider 35.
He died after a long battle with cancer.
He was a caring person, proud of his service and contributed to the effort to keep all Black Widows
and Spiders in touch.
Here is an article written by Harold: After getting in touch with the Black Widows group I got the
roster from Richard Green. The next thing I did was get my gunner's location and called him. Much
to my amazement, he was happy to hear from me. Talking to Fred Norris opened up a whole new
emotion that I had suppressed all these years. I went out to Reno and saw Fred and my crew chief Ben
Bright at that crew reunion in 2010.
I arrived in country in May 1968, went to LZ Sally, flew slicks but wanted to shoot back, so I got
into guns as a Peter Pilot, all the way thru Phu Bai. There I made AC with the callsign Hawk 35. At
Camp Eagle the units were changing to Cobras. I didn't volunteer for that and was sent to unit
operations under Major Grayson. I went there with two other warrants, Dean Murphy and John Collins,
as we had two months to go. After Nam I went to Fort Rucker to learn to instruct in CH-34s. From
there I was sent to Germany.
I started to see former 188th members writing on face mail. I noticed that the Dau Tieng crews were
tight with each other. After the Orlando VHPA reunion, I kept getting names on facebook. Most of the
names were the Dau Tieng names so I started adding you guys as friends on facebook. I enjoy reading
the posts. That as the saying goes This is my story and I'm sticking to it. Harold Clark formerly
Spider 35.
