More detail on this person: Colonel (Ret) Jerry William Childers, U. S. Army, 83, of Signal Mountain, passed away on Wednesday, April 27, 2022. Mr. Childers was born and raised in Waynesville, NC to the late William and Mary Childers. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Jane Childers; sons, William (Robin) Childers and Thomas Childers; grandchildren, Caitlin (Ethan) Brown and Conor Childers; great-grandson, Basil Brown; sisters, Mary (Dave) Timpany and Sharon (Jerry) Costanzo; brother, Alan (Julie) Childers; and several nieces and nephews. He retired from the US Army after 30 years and served 3 years in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Tennessee Technical College and his M.B.A. from Georgia Southern University. Jerry was also a member of Tyner United Methodist Church. During his military career he served as the Chief of Staff of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell and the Board of Directors for the National Medal of Honor Museum. He earned many decorations, medals, badge, citations and campaign ribbons in his service to his country including the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguish Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Silver Star and 2 Bronze Service Stars, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Oversea Service Medal, Air Assault Badge/Master Army Aviator's Badge, Army Staff Identification Badge, Vietnam Armed Forces, Campaign and Cross of Gallantry Medals. Visitation will be from 10 AM to 12 Noon on Friday, May 13, 2022 at Chattanooga Funeral Home - North Chapel in Hixson. A Committal Service will follow at 12:30 PM at Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
