More detail on this person: Development leader Gary Carlson dies Gary Carlson, director of Leavenworth Area Development, died last week. He was 56. Carlson, a Vietnam veteran and a native of Omaha, Neb., moved to Leavenworth County in 1995 to head its economic development organization. In that position he helped bring numerous industrial businesses to the area and fast became known as a tireless promoter of Leavenworth's assets. In an interview with The Neighborhood News this summer, Carlson, who was battling cancer, said he was reluctant to leave his job. And, in fact, he stayed on until his death. "I love coming to work every day," he said. Carlson, who died Sept. 1, was cremated. A memorial service was held last Wednesday. He leaves his wife, Mary Ellen Carlson, and two children.
