More detail on this person: Michael A. Citrano Jr. Beloved family man, Army veteran, airline pilot Mr. Michael A. Citrano Jr. passed away Monday January 4, 2021 at his home in Fanwood. He was 78 years old. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., to Michael Angelo and Frances Citrano, Michael grew up in Linden and was a 1959 graduate of Linden High School. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Seton Hall University in 1963 and studied law at St. John's University before entering the United States Army. Michael was based in Bien Hoa, near Saigon, Vietnam from 1965 to 1966 in the 118th Aviation Company (later designated the 118th Assault Helicopter Company) as a First Lieutenant Aircraft Commander of a UH 1 Huey Helicopter, logging 912 flying hours on over 700 missions. Upon completing his military service, Michael took a position with Eastern Airlines as a First Officer, eventually becoming a Captain and Check Captain before Eastern's closing in 1991. He went on to work at Atlas Air World Wide Cargo, piloting Boeing 727's, 747's, and Airbus 300's all over the world. In 2002 he became Director of Operations at Atlas, and continued with them as a consultant until present. A long-time member of the Ashbrook Men's Golf Association, he spent his free time playing as much golf as possible. He also loved tending his vegetable garden, volunteering at Overlook Medical Center, and cheering on his beloved Seton Hall Pirates. Mr. Michael A Citrano, Jr. was predeceased by his sister Christine, brother-in-law John Duffy, niece Diane Apadula, and nephew John Duffy. He is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Susan (Lutz) Citrano; by their loving children Michael (Kristen Novello), Jody Patriarca (David), and Amy Sarrinikalaou (Ellias); and by his cherished grandchildren Jonas, Avery, Kalli, and Sammy. Friends and family are invited to celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Monday, January 11th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church, 1571 Martine Ave., Scotch Plains, NJ 07076. Burial will follow in St. Gertrude Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial contributions in Michael's name to either the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org or to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Food Bank, 1571 Martine Avenue, Scotch Plains, NJ 07076.
