More detail on this person: JOHN L. CONNOLLY JR. JACKSONVILLE - John Leo Connolly Jr., 67, of Jacksonville, died November 24th at Cape Fear Memorial Hospital in Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Infant of Prague Catholic Church in Jacksonville.Father Denis Hacket will officiate. Burial with full military honors will follow at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville. Mr. Connolly graduated from Girard College in Philadelphia, PA in 1948.He worked as a draftsman until he enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 1951.Following training as an aviation radar repairman, he served in Korea and aboard ship in the Mediteranean.Mr. Connolly entered Naval Flight School in February 1954 and served as an attack pilot in the Marine Corps until 1957, at which time he transitioned to flying helicopters. He was released from active duty in May 1959 and was employed asa customer service engineer with Remington Rand Univac in Philadelphia. With the Vietnam War raging, he returned to active duty in the Marine Corps in November, 1961. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam; the first two flying helicopters, the third tour flying multi-engine transportation/tanker KC- 130 aircraft. He retired from the Marine Corps in June of 1974 as a captain.During his military service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Following his retirement from the Marine Corps, he served as the Computer System Administrator for Coastal Carolina Community College until the fall of 1995. Most recently he has lended his expertise in computers to Onslow County Public Schools. Mr. Connolly was preceded in death by his parents, John Leo Connolly, Sr., and Margaret Morgan.He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Alice Langston Connolly; three children, Maura Connolly Lorentz of Rocky Point, Staff Sergeant John Mark Connolly of Shallotte, and Margaret Connolly Kelley of Jacksonville; one granddaughter, Samantha Rae Christie of Wilmington; a sister, Jeanne Connolly Cordez and nephew Mark Cordez of Baltimore, Maryland. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday night at Jones Funeral Home in Jacksonville. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association and American Diabetes Foundation.
