More detail on this person: Richard James Conard Sr. of Chestertown died on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2017 at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. He was 71. Born on Nov. 23, 1945 in Westgrove, Pa., he was the son of the late William Eves and Dorothy Cloud Conard. He graduated from McDonogh School in McDonogh in 1963 and from The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina in Charleston, S.C. in 1967. After college, he made a career as a member of the United States Army and served as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam. He attended the Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kan., where he earned a master's degree in 1985. He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel in 1989. He and his family moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland and settled in Chestertown. He began his second career with Dixon Valve & Coupling Co., where he remained until he retired as a vice president in 2013. Mr. Conard was an avid gardener. He enjoyed sports of all types, especially rowing. He volunteered coaching both boys and girls in lacrosse, soccer and field hockey, and was an assistant coach with boys wrestling. He also had the opportunity to coach several seasons of Special Olympics basketball. He was a reading mentor and a character counts participant at Garnet Elementary School. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Joyce Bramble Conard; his son, Richard James Conard Jr. of Hanover, Pa.; his daughter, Jane Conard Ireland and her husband Michael David Ireland of York, Pa.; and three grandchildren, Richard James Conard III and Dana Bree Conard of Chestertown and Liam Michael Ireland, of York.
