More detail on this person: Mr. Eugene Blair Conrad 75, of Daleville, Ala., formerly of Charlotte, died Sept. 6, 1992, at home. Funeral was Monday at Chapel of the Flags, Fort Rucker, Ala. Burial will be Thursday in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery. Searcy Funeral Home of Enterprise, Ala., was in charge. Mr. Conrad, a Charlotte native, retired as an Army colonel in 1972 after 32 years. He also was an aviation safety and accident-prevention consultant until 1986. He attended N.C. State College, where he was a tackle on the football team. He was called to active Army duty in 1940 and later graduated from the University of Omaha with a degree in general education. He earned his master's degree in systems management from the University of Southern California in 1974. He commanded an infantry unit in the Pacific during World War II, until captured during the fall of Bataan in 1942. As a prisoner of war he took part in the Bataan Death March and was released in 1945. He also had served in Europe, Iran and Vietnam. His decorations included the Silver Star, Legion of Merit Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart, Vietnamese Honor Medal and Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and numerous campaign ribbons. He also received the Sen. James H. McClellan Aviation Safety Award for 1970-1971 for outstanding contributions to Army aviation safety. Survivors are his wife, Wanda of Daleville; sons, Eugene Conrad Jr. of Huntsville, Ala., Robert Conrad of Lancaster, Pa., John Conrad of Dallas; daughters, Ms. Rebecca Richie, Ms. Agatha King, both of Birmingham, Ala., Ms. Robin Lane; sister, Ms. Thelma Rudisill of Richmond; 16 grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, Ala. 36302; or to Bridlewood Chapel, P.O. Box 501, Ozark, Ala. 36360.
