More detail on this person: Retired US Army CW4 Charles Oliver Davis, 84 years old, went to be with the Lord, Friday, June 16, 2017, at the VA Medical Center, in Asheville, N.C. He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather and truly impacted everyone that he knew. He was preceded in death by his parents Lex B. Davis and Edna Floyd Davis, four sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Geraldine Collins Davis; three children, Linda Kelley (Shawn), Edward Davis (Kathleen), and Sheila Kelley (Chuck). Survivors also include eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are his sisters, Louise Fowler and Carolyn Ippolilio and several nieces and nephews. Charles Davis was born in Black Mountain, N.C. in 1932. He entered active duty military service in 1949 and his service would span the course of 30 years. Although he held many positions, aviation would become his specialty. Davis achieved the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4, and was awarded numerous medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, and 30 Air Medals. He also earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business. His military career began as an Army paratrooper medic, serving in Korea. In 1956, he took the opportunity to attend flight school in Ft. Wolters, Texas. He eventually returned to North Carolina and was assigned to Ft. Bragg, as an Army flight instructor. In 1961, he was re-assigned to Okinawa to the infamous UTT (Utility Tactical Transport Helicopter Company) which would play a huge involvement in the Vietnam War. Even before the Vietnam War started, Davis was considered a highly experienced pilot. After his military career concluded, he became involved in law enforcement in south Alabama, and worked his way to becoming a police chief before finally returning to North Carolina in 2013. He and his wife Gerri were active members of the Green Hills Presbyterian Church in Enterprise, Alabama for 35 years. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the VA Medical Center in Asheville, NC for their constant care and support. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Green Hills Presbyterian Church in Enterprise, AL or the VA Medical Center (CLC1 Bingo). The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Harwood Home For Funerals in Black Mountain, N.C. A memorial service will immediately follow with Chaplain Edward Tanner officiating. Burial will be at 2:00 pm at the Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC.
