More detail on this person: U.S. Army Lt. Col. (Ret.) William Daniel (Dan) Dantzler, 83, of Elizabethtown, KY, passed away on December 29, 2018 peacefully in his sleep. Dan was born on December 6, 1935 to William and Ruby Duggan Dantzler in Winnsboro, SC, where his father worked for the Soil Conservation Service. During World War II the family returned to Providence, SC, a large rural community in Orangeburg County near Holly Hill. They shared the home her grandfather built. After the war, the family remained in Providence. Dan was career military graduating from Clemson University, SC ROTC program, serving three tours as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam Conflict, incuding his time with the 1st Cav Air Mobile unit. From 1976-1980 he served as managing staff of Officer's Christian Fellowship conference grounds in Colorado and Pennsylvania. After retiring, he and Shelly enjoyed serving as volunteer staff at Hardin Memorial Hospital and he is a member of Stithton Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruby Duggan Dantzler; a sister, Kay Castine and brother-in-law, Jimmie Baker. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Shelly Mikell Hampton Dantzler of Elizabethtown; three daughters, Rebecca Dantzler Messamer (Larry) of Colorado Springs, CO, Sarah Kay Thurstenson (Chris) of Siloam Springs, AR and Beth Mikell Singleton (David) of Louisville, KY; five grandchildren, Jason Messamer (Shauna), Andrew Messamer (Tori), and Steven Messamer all of Colorado Springs, CO, David Thurstenson and Abby Thurstenson of Fayetteville, AR and five great-grandchildren. Also a brother, Robert Carrol Dantzler (Martha Clair) of Roanoke, VA and sister, Sandy Baker (the late Jimmie Baker) of Pensacola, FL. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home, in Radcliff, KY. Burial will follow in Vine Grove Cemetery in Vine Grove, KY with military honors. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday after 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
