More detail on this person: LTC (Ret) Walter George Dermatis, 80, of Plattsburgh, passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. He was born February 27, 1929, in New York, the son of George and Gisela (Ströbel) Dermatis. He attended Keene Elementary School, and graduated from Keene Valley High School and Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a United States Regular Army career officer for 22 years, with assignments including battalion command in combat and Pentagon staff. He was a Master Army Aviator, and an aviation instructor and examiner. A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, he retired as a lieutenant colonel. Among the decorations and commendations he received in the course of his service were the Legion of Merit, Air Medal -1-3 OLC, Commendation Ribbon with Pendant, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one OLC, Korean Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a number of Army Aviator awards. Following his retirement, he worked as a commercial and residential Real Estate Broker in Plattsburgh. Although his career took him all over the world, his heart remained in the North Country and he loved the outdoors. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and golfer. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Joan (Loewen) Dermatis; his daughters, Debi Bruno of Douglasville, GA, Donna Jaye of Pebble Beach, CA, and Dayle Dermatis of Oxnard, CA; his grandchildren, Megan Jaye, Baylee Bruno, Matthew Jaye, David Jaye, and Emily Jaye; two great-grandchildren; a niece, Pamela Bickle; and a nephew, Richard Clark. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Diamond "George" Dermatis, and his sister Alice Clark. Calling hours will be held Monday, January 18, 2010, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown Funeral Home, 29 Broad St. in Plattsburgh. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at 1 p.m. at the Peru Community Church, followed by military honors. Burial will be at North Elba Cemetery in Lake Placid. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
