More detail on this person: A Celebration of Life for Samuel Glenn Echols will be held on Monday, June 14th, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Ellerbe Baptist Church, 10705 Ellerbe Road, Shreveport, Louisiana. Sam was born August 31, 1948 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma to Glenn and Frances Echols. He grew up in Sapulpa, Oklahoma and graduated from Sapulpa High School and attended Northeastern Oklahoma State College, where he earned his pilot's license. Sam was commissioned as a warrant officer with the US Army and served with the 114th Helicopter Company and 135th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. He received two Purple Hearts for being shot down in his Huey and other honors throughout his service. He moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and married Carol Barr, with whom he had two children. They relocated to Shreveport, where Sam worked for 32 years before retiring. He was a Life Member of the Shreveport Lodge #122 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and served as the Exalted Ruler, Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler, Past State President and Past Grand Squire. He passed away after a valiant fight against heart disease on Sunday, June 6th, 2021. He is survived by his daughter, Leslie Echols, his son and daughter in law, Donald and Kelly Echols, and his grandchildren, Jackson and Samantha, and a host of cousins, family and friends, who dearly loved him. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at www.woundedwarriorproject.org.
