More detail on this person: Tommy Lee Erby was born on January 17, 1943, to the late Joseph C. Sr. and Tinnie Erby. He was the youngest of his siblings, Joseph "Sonny" Erby and Linda Baxter. Major Tom Erby spent over 20 years in the United States Army, flying UH-1 helicopters, and became the 1st AA Armored Officer at Fort Knox, KY. After retiring from the military, Major Erby spent over two decades teaching and learning in the Jackson Public and Hinds County school districts. He was the Senior Army Instructor for several JPS middle and high schools. Under his leadership, numerous students were influenced by his high expectations and belief that one can still make great accomplishments in spite of adversity. At his passing on May 13, 2018, Major Erby leaves to cherish his memory and carry on his legacy: his loving wife of 26 years, Manola; four daughters, Gwendolyn, Genea', Genette, and Lauren; one goddaughter, Brianna Gardner; two godsons, Douglas Smith and Kenneth Verdell; one sister, Linda Baxter; one sister-in-law, Mary Erby; one brother-in-law, Henry Coleman, Jr.; twelve grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, family, coworkers, students and friends. Funeral Service for Major Erby is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 25, 2018, at Anderson United Methodist Church, 6205 Hanging Moss Rd., Jackson, MS 39206. Visitation is 1 - 7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2017, (family present 5 - 7 p.m.) at Lakeover Funeral Home, 1525 Beasley Rd., Jackson, MS 39206.
