Jon had been ill for a long time with a failing heart. He was sent home from the hospital two weeks
ago to spend his remaining days at home.
No wonder the weekly calls stopped. He has called me continously since moving to OK in Jul 11.
Each call ended with him telling me he was dying. Tortured soul. Extremely proud to have been
placed in the Alabama Military Hall of fame.
I encouraged him to talk to the author Earl Swift who wrote Where they Lay. John closely witnessed
the death of Maj Jack Barker, 24 Mar 71 when Barker's slick had it's main rotor shot off in Laos and
Jon always talked about seeing the CE fall out of the aircraft. At times he would say telling his
story was good for him, at times not.
