More detail on this person: Lt. Col. Darwin G.
Edwards, USAF (Ret.), 67, took his final flight on
November 22, 2003 after a long illness.
Darwin Edwards was born and raised in Whigham,
GA. He attended Whigham high school and served
4 years enlisted prior to being selected for the
fourth class at the United States Air Force
Academy. He later earned degrees from the
University of Georgia and the University of
Arkansas. He was a highly-decorated combat
veteran, with 33 years of exceptionally honorable
military service and 14 years of distinguished
service to the Robins AFB, GA, Museum of
Aviation. His combat service came in Viet Nam
with the 20th Special Operations Squadron. During
these tours, he was recognized as an outstanding
pilot and adept leader. He also served at Robins
AFB as a tanker crewmember, at Homestead,
Florida, where he commanded a search and rescue
unit, and at Washington, D.C. with the elite 1st
Helicopter Squadron. Among his numerous
awards and decorations were the Silver Star, two
Distinguished Flying Crosses, three Meritorious
Service Medals, the Purple Heart, and the Republic
of Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry. After retiring
from the Air Force in 1989, Darwin became Curator
of the Robins AFB, GA, Museum of Aviation. As
curator, he was responsible for establishing,
collecting, and caring for the Museum's
collections of vintage aircraft, historical
documents, and memorabilia. Colonel Edwards is
survived by his wife, Sheila, their sons, Richard
and Howard, Howard's wife, Wendy, and
granddaughter, Jenilyn Edwards. He is also
survived by six sisters and three brothers.
Internment was at Andersonville, GA, National
Cemetery.
