More detail on this person: JOHN F. ELDER III CUERO -- John Fletcher Elder III, Lt. Col., USA, (ret.), 65, of Oak Hill, Va. and formerly of Cuero, died Monday, June 12, 2000. He was born June 20, 1934, in Clinton Community, to the late J.F. and Annie Lee Brown Elder. He was a graduate of Cuero High School and a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He had a distinguished career in the U.S. Signal Corps including two tours of duty in Vietnam. Military awards included the Soldier's Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, 18 Air Medals, National Defense Medal and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. He was active in the leadership of the Washington Chapter of the West Point Class of 1957 alumni organization and had held many positions of leadership in the Annandale United Methodist Church, Annandale, Va. After his retirement from the U.S. Army, he earned dozens of national awards for being a top producer in real estate sales. He was a Methodist. Survivors: wife, Carlyn Lang Elder of Oak Hills, Va.; sons, John Fletcher Elder IV of Charlottesville, Va. and Scott Christopher Elder of Fort Collins, Colo.; sister, Peggy Elder Miller of Victoria; brothers, Donald A. Elder of Victoria and Patrick Elder of Cuero and eight grandchildren. Preceded in death by: parents and infant daughter, Sandra. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Annandale United Methodist Church in Annandale, Va. Burial will be 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 3, with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
