Freestone Jr. USA (Ret.) 74, died suddenly
September 22, 2014. Bill, as he was known to
friends and family served his country for nearly 3
decades on active duty and again for over 10 years
as a civil servant to the DoD. His distinguished
Army career included flying UH-1 Helicopters in
Vietnam, where he earned the Bronze Star and
serving as a Program Manager for advanced
electronics and IT programs. In Civil Service he
continued as Program Manager over C4ISR and CI
programs and ultimately transitioned to private
industry where he worked as a Senior Systems
Engineer until the time of his death. Throughout
his professional career he married, raised
children, toured the world, earned two masters
degrees, and enjoyed many hobbies and personal
projects. Most recently he took great pleasure in
spending time with his grandchildren and working
through boat restoration projects. His life was
dedicated to family and country, he touched many
lives and exemplified many roles to include
friend, colleague, soldier, aviator, leader,
life-long student, educator, engineer, innovator,
inventor, program manager, mentor, accomplished
pianist, mechanic and carpenter. Above all, he was
a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Bill is
survived by his wife June and family of 14 sons,
daughters, and grandchildren. He will be missed
deeply by family and friends. A remembrance will
be held at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home on
Saturday, September 27 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. A
service and burial will be held at Arlington
National Cemetery on a future date.
