More detail on this person: ROLAND G. FONTAINE ROLAND G. FONTAINE, 63, of 1102 Cambridge Court, a retired Army lieutenant colonel, died yesterday in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Born in Woonsocket, he was a son of the late Raoul and Jeannette (Guy) Fontaine. Colonel Fontaine was a graduate of Mount St. Charles Academy. He served in the Marine Corps for several years, and in 1963 graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. After serving as a first aviation officer, he transferred to the Army in 1966. He attended the Naval War College Command and Staff Program in 1977. He served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War as a helicopter squadron pilot. Among the numerous commendations he received were the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, 11 Air Medals, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. He served the last 12 years as an Army research and development officer in various countries, including France and Germany, and at the Pentagon, from where he retired in 1988. After retiring, he became active in veterans programs, including MIA efforts, and served as president of a Disabled American Veterans chapter. He also returned to Vietnam often to assist in efforts to rebuild the country's infrastructure, particularly schools for Vietnamese children. He leaves a son, John Fontaine in Texas; and a daughter, Michelle Cazier in Maryland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in Precious Blood Church, Carrington Avenue. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Bellingham, Mass.
