He often said there was no better place to be as a child in those days. After getting into his share of mischief he achieved the highest level in scouting, the Eagle Badge and graduated from Four Oaks High School in 1963. His love for aviation continued throughout his life, but his career path started at UNC's Pharmacy School in Chapel Hill. The Vietnam War interrupted his studies and he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was trained to fly helicopters and was sent to Vietnam. He flew Chinook helicopters there in 1968 and 1969. Afterwards, Sam was stationed in Germany for 2 years. Sam was awarded The Distinguished Fly Cross two times in February of 1969. He was also awarded The Air Medal in September of 1968 and March of 1969. After returning to the United States, he transitioned to the Army National Guard so he could continue toward his degree to become a registered Pharmacist. He graduated in 1974 and begun his career at People's Pharmacy in Williamston, NC. As he had a desire to return to the Four Oaks area, the place of his childhood, he became a pharmacist at Revco in Smithfield. Later he was given the opportunity to open the Rite Aid Pharmacy in Four Oaks, which later became Kerr Drug, and he worked there until his retirement in 2005. During his retirement, Sam enjoyed traveling with his wife Jonnie and visiting their grandkids. He loved his model airplanes, race cars, hunting and fishing. Sam was a caring and loving man and will be missed by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Jonnie B. George; sons, Brent George and wife, Stephanie of Clayton; Derik George and wife, Maura of Castle Rock, Colorado; grandchildren, Cameron, Riley, Evan, Aubrey and Alex George; the mother of his children, Pat George of Clayton.
