More detail on this person: Turner Or Buck Griffin, 75 of San Antonio, Texas Obituaries San Antonio Express-News (TX) - Thursday, September 15, 2011 Colonel Turner "Buck" Griffin, Jr. Army, (Ret.), age 75, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2011 in San Antonio, Texas. Buck was born in Henderson, Texas to his parents Turner and Allise Wylie Griffin. He graduated high school from Culver Military Academy in Indiana and was a 1958 graduate of the US Military Academy. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lt. in the Artillery. Buck served in Command and Staff assignments at many stateside locations and posted overseas to Korea, Italy, Germany and Zaire. He served two combat tours in Vietnam. His primary duties were aviation related. Among awards he received during his military career: The Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, The Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Twenty-Two Air Medals, The Combat Infantryman Badge, The Master Army Aviator Badge, The Defense Meritorious Medal and The Legion of Merit. While in the service, he obtained an M.B.A. from Long Island University. Buck retired after 26 years with the rank of Colonel. Following his retirement, he served as an Admissions Officer for West Point from 1983 - 2006. Buck helped over 350 men and women become cadets at the U.S. Military Academy. The Superintendent of West Point awarded Buck the Department of the Army Civilian Commendation Award in 2006 for his service with the program. Buck not only loved the military, he also loved his family, reading, music, dogs and a decent glass of wine. Turner is survived by his wife, Charlotte Griffin; three children, Melanie Griffin, Turner Griffin III of Flower Mound, TX, and Laura Jellie of Madisonville, LA; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Alex, Rachel, and Chelsea; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah. Buck and his family wish to thank the staff of Life Care Hospital for their compassion and support during this difficult time. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 18, 2011, at Porter Loring Mortuary North. SERVICE MONDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2011 9:45 A.M. PORTER LORING NORTH CHAPEL Interment with Full Military Honors will follow in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to West Point Academy, United States Military Academy, West Point, NY 10996-1985; or to The Animal Defense League of Texas, 11300 Nacogdoches, San Antonio, TX 78217-2318.
