More detail on this person: Colonel Leslie Harold Gilbert United States Army (Ret.) Colonel Leslie Harold Gilbert passed away on January 23, 2023, at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Born May 15, 1927, he spent his early years in River Rouge, Michigan. In 1945, he began his long and faithful service in the United States Army. Commissioned in August 1946, he went on to become both an engineer and an aviator. He was a Liaison Pilot, Army Aviator and ultimately a Master Army Aviator. In 1967-68, he commanded the 223rd Combat Support Aviation Battalion in Vietnam, and later worked at Army Materiel Command, as well as heading the US Delegation to the NATO Panel for helicopters. After retiring from the Army, he worked in the private sector in development and early production of the Apache Advanced Attack Helicopter. Les was very devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ruth Barnes Gilbert, to whom he was married for 62 years. He is survived by his daughters Kathleen Howard and Susan Guerrant (Bill), grandchildren Megan Kiernan, Ryan Howard, Jessie Howard, and by his loving companion, Gisela Fleig. He had a love of all animals. His retirement years were spent with his faithful dog Shelby. A funeral service will be held on March 4, 2023, at Plymouth Haven Baptist Church at 11 a.m. with a reception following in the Fellowship Hall. Visitation will be at Demaine's Funeral Home in Old Town Alexandria on March 3, 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Fairfax County or to Wounded Warriors.
