More detail on this person: Vernon Grigg dies at 64; Army vet, school principal Vernon C. Grigg Jr., who last month retired as principal of Marshall Elementary School, died last Friday. He was 64. The cause of death has not yet been determined. Grigg devoted most of his adult life to the military, but he decided to pursue a career in education after retirement. Grigg, the grandson of a music teacher, tried to instill in his pupils a love of music by piping classical tunes through Marshall's hallways, said Grigg's wife, Nora. ''He could play all the instruments,'' said Nora Grigg, who is principal of Holladay Magnet School. ''He really enjoyed it.'' Grigg was born in Charlotte, N.C., in 1935, the son of a teacher and a day laborer. He received a music degree at Virginia State College in 1958. After graduation, Grigg taught music to disabled adults while awaiting his Army commission. Grigg served two tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. His work won him a Bronze Star and a Meritorious Service Medal. He retired as a lieutenant colonel at Fort Huachuca in 1980. Mrs. Grigg said that after a series of business ventures, her husband became enchanted with the idea of teaching. He briefly taught music before accepting the job as principal of Marshall Elementary School. ''Children were the joy of his life,'' Nora Grigg said. In addition to his wife, Grigg is survived by daughters Monique Grigg Harley of Tucson, Nicole Grigg of San Francisco and Dana Grigg of Cambridge, Mass; son Vernon C. Grigg III of San Francisco; brother Don Grigg of Bethesda, Md.; and one grandson. Services were held yesterday.
