More detail on this person: Carl Merwyn Hunter was born August 5, 1929 in Albany, MO to Woodson and Bertha Hunter. He lived on the family farm until he joined the Army out of high school. During his 20 year career in the Army, he served two tours in Vietnam as a Helicopter Pilot. He retired from the Army in 1968 as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. In 1956 he married Barbara Frances Thaete in Philadelphia, PA. They had 3 daughters. After retiring from the Army, he moved the family to Springfield, MO. He retired a second time after a career as an Insurance Agent. He enjoyed many activities such as camping with the family when the kids were young. Getting out on the local lakes and rivers. He even built his own canoe and kayak. He really enjoyed playing golf with his grandsons and friends. Through the years he volunteered for many charities such as Meals on Wheels, Crosslines, and the Childhood Reading Program at a local school. He was very active in his church serving as both a Deacon and Elder. He passed away June 5, 2018 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Barbara Hunter; daughter, Barbara Gideon and Larry Robinson of Cape Fair, MO; daughter, Fran Hodge and Greg Hodge of Holland, MO; daughter, Pattie Hunter and Robert Mack of Springfield, MO; grandson, Justin Gideon and Kim Day; grandson, Chad Gideon and Christi Gideon; grandson, Taylor Hodge; grandson, Brandon Hodge; and two great-granddaughters, Gracie Gideon and Zara Gideon. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday June 15, 2018 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, MO. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until service time at 10:30a.m. A brief service for the family will be held at noon at Missouri Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Greene County Humane Society or Ozarks Food Harvest.
