More detail on this person: COL (Ret) Timmy L. Hines, 76, of Austin, TX, went to his Heavenly Father on April 3, 2021, after four battles with lung cancer over the past 9 years. He will be remembered as a much loved husband, father, and grandfather. Timmy was born in Eagle Pass, TX to Roy Worth and Edna Artie (McCormick) Hines. At the age of two, his family moved to Abilene, TX. While in Abilene High School he sang and played Bass Guitar with a band of friends. He enlisted in the Texas Army National Guard in June of 1965, graduated from OCS in 1968, branched Field Artillery, and shortly afterwards, volunteered for active duty in order to go to Vietnam as a Helicopter Pilot. He attended Army Rotary Wing Flight School and graduated in 1970. Known as "Bear" (short for "Honey Bear"), he served heroically in Vietnam, including Lam Son 719 and the locations of Vinh Long/Mekong Delta, Laos, Cambodia, and areas "between the border and the DMZ", from Oct 1970-Oct 1971 as an OH-6 Scout Pilot in B Troop ("Dutchmasters"), 7th Squadron, 1st Air Cavalry Regiment, 1st Aviation Brigade, earning 23 Air Medals, 2 with Valor, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He then attended and graduated from Tarleton University and attended TX A&M for Graduate work. After three years on Active Duty, he returned to the National Guard and meritoriously served another 26 years in several "hard" positions including Cavalry Troop Commander, Engineer Company Commander, Aviation Battalion Commander, Aviation Brigade Executive Officer, Group Commander, State Troop Command Chief of Staff, Director of Personnel, and Director of Logistics, retiring as a Colonel in 1998 with 33 years of total service, earning several additional medals including the Legion of Merit. In his civilian career, Timmy was a machinist in Abilene TX, a machine shop and welding teacher at Temple TX High School, and then simultaneously served 20 years in numerous positions as a Civil Service Military Technician with the TX National Guard. He loved the Three Stooges, old and fast cars, country drives, country music, starched blue jeans, model airplanes, cookies, his family, and most especially, his grandsons. He was a Life Member of VFW Post 8787. Friday Night Karaoke with his son and grandsons was his favorite VFW event. His grandson, Donnie Worth Hines (7 mo), sister, Janice Cook, aunts Evelyn (McCormick) Hudgens (Don), Hellen (McCormick) Reneau (Irvin), Mildred "Sue" McCormick, Mary Alice Hines, Laura Hines, Gladyse Hines, Neoma Hines, and uncles LtCol (Ret) Charlie T McCormick, Edgar Hines (Billye), Ray Carson Hines predeceased him. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 32 years, Elizabeth "Lisa" (Harman), his son Jerry (Jodie), two wonderful grandsons, Benjamin and Cory, of Katy TX, one nephew, several cousins, his Mother-In-Law, Ann Purcell of Kingwood TX, Father-In-Law, W James Harman of Sarasota FL, and In-Laws Katherine Dietz (Jack) of Albuquerque NM, Christopher Purcell (Robin) of Mena AR, J Reginald Harman (Quirina) of Austin TX, Christoph Harman (Ruth) of Broomfield CO, and Laura Harman of Arlington VA, many friends and Battle Buddies, and his loyal pooch Daisey Mae. The family would also like to thank the amazing and kind care of Timmy during his final days in the ICU at St David's North Austin Medical Center. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 11, 2021 from 2:00-6:00 pm, at Cook Walden Funeral Home, 6100 N Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX. Funeral Mass will be on Monday, April 12, 2021 from 10:00-11:00 am at St. Albert the Great Catholic Church, 12041 Bittern Hollow Dr, Austin, TX. Military Honors Ceremony will follow at 12:00 Noon at Cook Walden Cemetery, 14501 N Interstate Hwy 35, Pflugerville, TX. A reception will follow at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, VFW Post 8787, 500 VFW Rd, Austin, TX. Interment will take place at a later date at the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery in Killeen, TX.
