More detail on this person: Dale Haan 1942-2013 Dale Haan of Cottage Grove, Ore., died on Feb 3, 2013, of cancer. He was born in Chicago in 1942. Dale served 20 years as a naval aviation officer. He was deployed to Vietnam as a helicopter pilot with the "Sea-wolves" Helicopter Attack Squadron (Light) Three (HAL-3) from 1967 to 1968. In 1974 he graduated from the United States Naval Postgraduate School with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. During his career, he also flew helicopters in support of anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, vertical replenishment missions, and as a project pilot at the Naval Air Weapons Station, China Lake. In addition, he helped to establish the Navy's Aviation Rescue Swimmer program. After retiring from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, he earned both bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Oregon in computer science. Upon graduation, he returned to China Lake to work as a civilian software engineer on the Tomahawk and HARM missile programs. In 2000, he retired from his software job and returned to his Oregon tree farm where he and his wife and partner Penny resumed their avocations as tree farmers and cattle ranchers. Dale is survived by his beloved wife Penny and son Eric, who is also a software engineer and a Navy Reserve officer.
