More detail on this person: Mr. Timothy Claude "Charlie" Hankins Jr. BAPTIST VALLEY, Va. -- Mr. Timothy Claude "Charlie" Hankins Jr., 59, of the Caleb Hollow section of Baptist Valley, went to be with the Lord Friday, June 8, 2007, at his home following a lengthy illness. He was born in Baptist Valley and was the son of the late Claude and Jeanette Harrison Hankins. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired locomotive engineer with Norfolk-Southern Railroad. He was a Tazewell High School Class of 1966 graduate and was a U.S. Army Vietnam veteran. He retired from the military as a Chief Warrant Officer and served as a helicopter pilot. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the MOAA. He was a faithful member of Cliffield Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, where he served in many capacities including Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and head of the Property Committee. Charlie enjoyed life and was always in awe at the wonders of God's creations. Survivors are his loving wife of 34 years, Gussie Earls Hankins; one daughter, Amanda Hankins of Knoxville, Tenn.; one son, Timothy Hankins of Cedar Bluff, Va.; three grandchildren, Austin, Dallas, and Albany; special daughter, Joni Shawver and husband Eddie of North Tazewell, Va.; one sister, Katie Haines and husband Jim of Falls Mills, Va.; sister-in-law, Frances Earls of Cedar Bluff; special caregivers, Clara Rasnake, Becky Davis, Betty Looney, Linda Miller, Pauline Bandy, Judy Colley, Hannah Sluss, Kenneth Earls, and the staff of Preferred Hospice; several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles and a host of loving friends and family as well as his special companion and pet dog, Norman, also survive. Funeral services for Timothy Claude "Charlie" Hankins Jr. will be conducted Monday, June 11, 2007, at 2 p.m. at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Va., with the Rev. Rufus Spence and the Rev. Chris White officiating. Interment will follow at Harrison-Earls Family Cemetery at Cliffield, Va. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Earls, Sam Cecil, Ron Presley, John Pennineton, Jerry Cochran, and Ken Crabtree. Honorary pallbearers will be Elders and Deacons of Cliffield Christian Church. Members of Casey-Shortt VFW Post No. 9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call after 6 p.m. today at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands. Memorial contributions may be made to Cliffield Christian Church, 345 Earls Branch Rd., Pounding Mill, VA 24637.
