More detail on this person: William M. (Bill) Hayes William M. (Bill) Hayes, LTC, U.S. Army (Ret.) passed away peacefully December 1st, leaving his wife Norma; son Mark and his wife Deborah with their sons Tyler and Colton; and his daughter Shawn. He was born in West Virginia, but spent the last 27 years in San Antonio, TX. Bill enlisted in the Army as a Private in 1948. On returning from Korea in 1952, where he served as a tank commander, SFC Hayes left the service. In 1956 Bill received a direct commission in the Maryland National Guard. He returned to active duty in 1962 as a Captain and served until he retired in 1977. Bill attended numerous military schools and completed a Bachelor of Science degree at Troy State University. He was a senior Army Aviator, rated in both fixed and rotary wing aircraft. He served two tours with helicopter units in Vietnam. In addition to the many unit awards, his personal decorations included the Legion of Merit, 3 awards of Distinguished Flying Cross, 19 Air Medals, the Bronze Star, 2 Army Commendation medals, a Purple Heart, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and the Korean Service Medal.
