More detail on this person: Herring, Harold D. Harold D. Herring, 79, died Saturday, July 5, 2003 in Hospice Savannah, Inc. The Columbus, Georgia native had lived in Savannah for 25 years. He served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and then joined the U.S. Army, where he served three tours of duty in Southeast Asia as a helicopter pilot, retiring with the rank of CW-4. During his retirement, he was an avid sportsman. He owned Harold's Rods and Reels where he was well-known for his custom crafted fishing rods and reels. He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Herring of Savannah; son and daughter-in-law, Howard D. and Leslie C. Herring of Savannah; daughter, Merry Coble of Warner Robins; brother and sister-in-law, James D. and Anna Herring of Richmond Hill; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia Ann and Charles Harper of Pitts; stepsons, Joseph W. Conley of Savannah and Mark A. Conley of Guyton; grandson, David Coble of Warner Robins; granddaughters, Rebecca and Rachel Conley of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews. Visitation: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Sunday, July 6, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel. Memorial Service: 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 7, at Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.
