June 2, 1947 - October 4, 2012 Philip Hugh Hirrel,
65, passed away peacefully at home in Bakersfield,
California Thursday, October 4, 2012 surrounded by
his family. Philip was born June 2, 1947 to Philip
and Elizabeth (Moran) Hirrel in Boston,
Massachusetts, the oldest of 9 children. Philip
grew up in Tujunga, California and graduated from
Saint Francis High School in La Canada, California
in 1965. Philip was a veteran of the Vietnam War
and proudly served for 5 years in the U.S. Army as
a helicopter pilot with an honorable discharge in
1972. Philip's employment in the oil industry as
Store Manager and Instrument Technician with
TOTCO relocated him and his family from Ventura
to Bakersfield in 1978. He laid roots in
Bakersfield and began a 20 year career as a
mechanic in the field of refrigeration and plant
maintenance for Sun Pacific Cold Storage and
General Mills. Philip enjoyed working with his
hands and spent his free time building and fixing
things. His hobbies included sailing, skiing,
playing pool and working on his 1972 Camaro. He
always enjoyed a cold beer and warm conversation
with friends. A beloved father, grandfather, son
and brother, Philip, is survived by his three
daughters Brandy Hirrel of Bakersfield, Dawn Brown
and husband Joseph Brown of Canyon Country,
Sherry Gladin and husband Lee Gladin of
Bakersfield; grandchildren Gavin, Zoe, Gabriel and
Ryder; mother of his children Terry Perry;
siblings Bernie Hirrel, Richard Hirrel, Neil
Hirrel, Mary Ann Bennett, Ellen Hajjali and
Elizabeth Dolan; long-term friend Neta Richardson.
He was preceded in death by his parents Philip and
Elizabeth Hirrel; siblings John Hirrel and Cathy
Jones. A viewing will be held on Sunday, October
14th, 1:00 - 5:00 pm at Mish Funeral Home for
friends and family. Philip will be laid to rest at
Bakersfield National Cemetery in a private
