More detail on this person: Ralph H. Hamner, Ltc (Ret) U.S. Army, age 77 of Jasper, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at the Baptist Medical Center-Princeton in Birmingham. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, at the First Baptist Church in Jasper with burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery. Harvey Jackson will officiate. Kilgore-Green Funeral Home in Jasper will direct. Visitation will be held from 5:30 until 8 p.m., today, Oct. 10, at the funeral home and from 10 until 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Mr. Hamner graduated from Walker High School where he lettered in football and basketball. Following high school, he graduated from the University of Alabama where he was in the ROTC program. Following college, he joined the Army. He was a career officer, graduating from Flight School at Ft. Rucker. He flew armed helicopters in Vietnam for two tours of duty. In recognition for his contributions and achievements, Mr. Hamner was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Vietnam Medal of Honor and 10 Air Medals. Until he became infirm, Mr. Hamner was an avid golfer and a loyal Tide fan, having served as the president of the Walker County Alumni Chapter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Powell A. Hamner; and brothers, Powell Simpson Hamner, Hoyt H. Hamner and Samuel Harvey Hamner. Mr. Hamner is survived by his wife, Jackie Hamner of Jasper; two sisters, Maxine Hamner Everett of Salisbury, N.C. and Sue Hamner Bailey of Laurel, Md.; four sisters-in-law, Helen Hamner, Nan Hamner, Charlotte Hamner and Sarah Presslor; one brother-in-law, H. J. Light and his wife, Virginia; several nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Ruby McCollum, Beatrice Mosely, Linda Bonner and Pauline Owens. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of Harvey Jackson's Sunday School Class, Jerry C. Byars, James H. Byars, Maj. Jerry C. Byars Jr., and Dr. Bobby Underwood. Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Jasper, 1604 4th Ave., Jasper, Ala. 35501; the Walker Area Community Foundation, 204 E. 19th St., Jasper, Ala. 35501; or to a charity of choice.
