"Little Butch" Hinson, Jr. Joel graduated from Tylertown High School in 1959 and the University of Southern Mississippi in 1963. He later earned a master's degree from Western Kentucky University. He served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1963-1990, including two tours of duty in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. Upon retirement, he returned to Tylertown and became an active member of the community. He joined Tylertown Baptist Church, serving as a deacon for many years. He co-founded the Walthall County Food Pantry in the mid-1990s and served as its president until 2017. He was actively involved with the local American Legion post.
