More detail on this person: LTC (Ret) George Oakie Hambrick, 93, of Temple, died peacefully in
his home on Monday, September 2, 2013.
He was born in Sayre, OK on January 28, 1920 to the late Joe and Gertrude Hambrick. He married
Maryan Clancy of Carter, OK on June 26, 1943. George joined the Air Force in 1940 and received his
pilot wings on his wedding day. He served in WW2, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. In 1952 he
co-piloted one of the first two helicopters over the Atlanic Ocean, making history during the
Trans-Atlantic flight.
George retired from the Air Force in 1970 and he and his wife settled at Lake OâÇÖ the Pines in east
Texas until their move to Temple 10 years ago. George and Maryan were very active as volunteers in
various nursing homes in the Temple area. He was also a member of Oak Park United Methodist
Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and son Patrick Hambrick. He is survived by his wife of 70
years, Maryan; daughter Suzi Jones and husband Al of Temple; son Mike Hambrick and wife Miriam of
Miami, Fl; cousins, Margaret Howard of Ok. City, OK and Odell Fanning of Spearman, TX;
grandchildren, Glynn Henderson of Temple, Julie Hambrick Bates of Cedar Park, TX, PJ Hambrick of
Alexandria, VA, and Ross and Brandi Hambrick of Atlanta, GA; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 11AM on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Temple Garden of Memories
Cemetery, 1801 Old Hwy 81, Temple. Johnny Miller of Oak Park United Methodist Church will be
officiating. Services have been entrusted to Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of a visitation, there
will be a Celebration of Life gathering at the Hambrick home after the service.
The family asks that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or Oak Park United Methodist
Church.
