More detail on this person: Leonard L. Hills TERRE HAUTE - Leonard L. Hills, 76, of Terre Haute, and formerly of Clinton and St. Bernice, passed away at 6:35 p.m. Friday, April 30, 2010, in Union Hospital at Terre Haute. He was a retired officer and pilot of the U.S. Air Force retiring in 1971 with the rank of major after serving 20 years of service and being involved in many worldwide assignments. He was born on Nov. 20, 1933, to Grover Hills and Gola Chatman Hills. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Terrell; a daughter, Kimberly Dahler and her husband John of Indianapolis; a son, Troy Hills and his wife Lorrie of Terre Haute; a brother, Elmo Hills and his wife Pat of Clinton; a sister, Frances Lawhorn of Brazil; and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, James W. Hills. Leonard attended grade school and high school in St. Bernice and graduated from Indiana State University in 1982. During his career, he served as a military officer and a pilot. He served in the Korean War with the U.S. Army infantry receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for Valor. He was a fixed wing and helicopter pilot in the USAF and served in Vietnam, as well as many other assignments. After retirement from the service, he owned and managed the Sunset Arms Apartments and operated a trucking business until 1988. He was a life-member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 972 and a life-member of the American Legion Post 346, both in Terre Haute. In keeping with his wishes, cremation was chosen. A memorial service and burial of his ashes will be 12:30 p.m. Monday in Walnut Grove Cemetery Chapel in Clinton with Pastor Larry Snyder officiating and military graveside rites by the VFW Post 972. Fitzpatrick Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.
