More detail on this person: Hughes was in my class 69-15 at Hunter. His Aircraft was performing an instrument departure with IP, the rotor contacted the tail boom, severing it. The UH-1D spiraled several times impacting on the IP's side killing him. Hughs opened his door and was engulfed with a fire ball. He exited the AC and ran on fire for some distance. He sucumbed his burns for 3 or 4 days, then died. Hughs would have been the youngest WO1 to graduate from flight school . His birthday would have been a couple of days before graduation.
