He rode his motorcycle to the base theater. He
went to an early, but after dark showing. This
must have been a Friday or Saturday night. WOC L.
Martinez from San Antonio and I drove the back
road to the theater from the WOC barracks and saw
him as he came out of the early show and we went
in. The next day we heard that he had run off the
road on the way back to the barracks. I was the
one who identified his body. After I got back to
Austin after graduation I went and visited with
his parents.
There was a backup at Advanced Training so most
of our class which was 67-something was given the
chance to take administrative leave for one month
and spent a month as a worker putting up the new
barracks at Wolters. Then when we got into Rucker
we had different class numbers.
I can only say that it must have been in 1968
because I started instrument training in January
so it was between January and May when we
graduated. I would guess that he died within two
months of graduation. So best guess March or
April of 68. I do not remember it being cold when
we went to the movie.
