JOHNSTON, 86, Clarksville, Tenn., died Saturday at Fieldstone Place Retirement Center, Clarksville, Tenn. He was born March 31, 1924, in Bruce Lake, the son of the late Ralph Valentine Johnston and Thelma Reed Johnston. Retired Lt. Col. Howard R. Johnston was retired from the U.S. Army after 23 years on active duty. He was a combat veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was a Senior Aviator, qualified in fixed and rotary wing aircraft and the 44th certified Flight Examiner in the United States. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion and Vietnam Helicopter's Association. He was a member of the Jewish faith. Survivors include two daughters, Nicole (Herschel) Vance, St. Louis, Mo., and Jill (James) Gilbert, Clarksville, Tenn.; sister Sharon (Jim) Hiland, Glendale, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Pauline, and their son, Eric. No services are planned. Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Funeral Home, 1510 Madison St., Clarksville, TN 37040, is in charge of arrangements.
